Youth visitors will be treated to fun games and competitions put on by the Boy Scouts of 109.
Parents will have a special break-out session where we will answer all your questions.  The night
will end with freshly made Dutch oven treats and a special video presentation.

We were drawn for one crew to the world renown Philmont High Adventure base (9 scouts and 3 adults) for 2012.  The outing dates are July 14-28, 2012.  The prerequisites for attending Philmont with the Troop are:

• Must be 14 years old (or turn 14 on the trail)
• Must be a Star scout
• Must be active in the Troop from the time you register until Philmont – that means 75% of the Monday meetings and 50% of the monthly outings.
• Must attend Camp Geronimo with the Troop in 2012 (or have gone with the Troop at least 4 times already)
• Must be a capable, fit backpacker as this trek will cover 50-70 miles…everything must be packed in and packed out.

Since we only have 12 total spots for this once-in-a-scouter’s-career type of trip, if we have more people who want to go than we have spots, preference will be given to the most senior active scouts (based on joining date).  Since we have to make a non-refundable deposit to Philmont, your initial deposit will need to be non-refundable.

Payment Schedule

1. First payment – $320, due on Monday, September 26, 2011
2. Second payment – $100, due on Monday, December 5, 2011
3. Third payment – $320, due on Monday, February 12, 2011

You will need to make your first payment on time to secure your spot. 

 

Additionally, there will be additional expenses to cover gas, travel and food coming and going.  We don’t  have the exact figures yet, but we estimate this cost to be ~$300-500.  That money will probably be due in the April-June time frame.

There is a chance that if we have much more demand for a High Adventure trip in 2012 than we can accommodate with Philmont, we MAY plan a secondary trip similar to last summer’s trip to Weminuche.

NAMED TO BSA NATIONAL HALL OF LEADERSHIP

Once-in-a-Century Honor among Programs Celebrating Scouting’s 100th Anniversary

Washington, D.C., July 26, 2010 – Ron McElhaney, a past Grand Canyon Council Board Member and Scout Leader from Phoenix, was among nearly 300 Scouts and Scout leaders nationwide named July 25 to the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) 100^th Anniversary National Hall of Leadership.

Ron McElhaney has been an active adult leader in Troop 109 since 1984. Ron has served as the Eagle Scout mentor for the Troop, which has produced more than 65 Eagle Scouts over the years. Ron has helped develop leadership in each Eagle Scout through his one-on-one mentoring.

“Ron continues to be a great asset at both the Council level and working with

individual boys in helping them towards earning their Eagle Rank,” said Larry Abbott,

Scout Executive at the Grand Canyon Council. “His leadership and dedication to

service in the Scouting community and in our city are without equal.”

During a ceremony at the close of the BSA’s Centennial Parade in Washington, D.C. on July 25, Ron was named to the National Hall of Leadership for making a significant difference in the life of another by the extraordinary service Ron has given, and the Scouting virtues he has modeled.

In addition to the July 25 ceremonies in the nation’s capital, each inductee will have his or her name recorded as part of the BSA’s 100th Anniversary archives at the National Scouting Museum in Irving, Texas.

“This is a once-in-a-century honor,” Abbott said. “We’re honoring, recognizing, and thanking our Scouts, leaders, and volunteers for the extraordinary differences they have made in the lives of others through their leadership.”

“What better way to help celebrate 100 years of Scouting in America than by giving the citizens of the communities we serve the opportunity to remember and honor these individuals who have made such a significant contribution to the lives of others and who have improved the quality of life for all,” said Robert J. Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive.

Chairing the Hall of Leadership program was Ernest G. “Ernie” Green, who earned a place in America’s civil rights history as one of the “Little Rock Nine” – the first nine African-American students to attend an all-white high school in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1957.

“The National Hall of Leadership epitomizes everything I have always respected about Scouting, because Scouting’s values help mold our young people to be the great leaders our country needs,” Green said. “I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the inductees receiving this one-time honor in Scouting’s history.”

One inductee from each of the nearly 300 BSA councils across the country was named to the National Hall of Leadership.  Each inductee is representative of all the nominations received by his or her council. Nominations to the National Hall of Leadership were submitted online in the form of a story about the nominee, written in 450 words or less.

The National Hall of Leadership is one of a number of programs designed to invite people across the country to join in and celebrate the Boy Scouts of America’s first century of service to America’s youth.
